Shirley J. Dreiss (1949-1993)

birdall_dreiss.jpgShirley Dreiss was a pioneer in hydrogeology, with influential contributions in karst hydrology, groundwater-surface water interactions, transport in the unsaturated zone, characterization of geologic heterogeneity, and fluid flow in subduction zones.   Sadly, her contributions were cut short when on December 14, 1993, and at the young age of 44, Shirley lost her life in a tragic car accident. She was then a Professor of hydrogeology and chair of the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Shirley completed her MS at the University of Missouri with Stan Davis and her PhD at Stanford with Irwin Remson. She pursued both theoretical, numerical, and field work, her knowledge and expertise enriching students, collaborators and all the prestigious and influential committees she served on. In the last year of her life, she was working on the hydrology of the Mono Lake groundwater system, this work initiated as a result of her participation on a National Research Council Committee. As the Birdsall Lecturer of the Geological Society of America (GSA) during 1991-1992 she delivered three pioneering lectures on karst hydrology, fluid flow in subduction zones, and indicator geostatistics for quantifying geological heterogeneity. To honor her legacy, the Birdsall Lecture of GSA was renamed as the Birdsall-Dreiss Lecture.
