Peter S. Eagleson
Peter (Pete) Eagleson is recognized as a world leader in hydrology. He is a Professor emeritus at MIT where he has taught since 1952. Eagleson was a pioneer in establishing the physical principles behind hydrological processes and integrating them towards a better understanding of river basin hydrologic response and local-to-global scale hydrology. His textbook, Dynamic Hydrology, published in 1970 as a bold and different approach to hydrologic sciences, served as a catalyst for the redefinition of the field of hydrology as a rigorous and quantitative scientific field at the heart of climate and earth system sciences.
Eagleson’s book on Dynamic Hydrology (McGraw-Hill, 1970, 462 pages) modernized the discipline and established it among the geosciences. The books Ecohydrology: Darwinian Expression of Vegetation Form and Function (Cambridge University Press, 2005, 484 pages) and Range and Richness of Vascular Land Plants: The Role of Variable Light (American Geophysical Union, 2013, 156 pages) established the field of “ecohydrology”. With concepts from a variety of disciplines, he developed a complete theory of soil-plant-atmosphere interactions, hypothesized concepts of ecological climax, theories for the optimal balance between vegetation and its environment, and predicted the location and dominance of different vegetation types over the globe.
Even more important than his personal contributions, Peter Eagleson chaired the U.S. National Research Council Committee on Opportunities in Hydrologic Sciences, which produced a landmark report (known also as the “Blue Book”). This report was the impetus for establishing hydrologic sciences as a distinct field within Geosciences and for establishing the Hydrologic Sciences Program within the National Science Foundation (NSF). Peter Eagleson served as president of the Hydrology Section of the American
Geophysical Union (AGU) from 1982-1984 and as AGU's president from 1986 to 1988.
For his extraordinary achievements Eagleson has received essentially every major recognition available to hydrologists. These include the 1991 International Hydrology Prize from the International Association of Hydrologic Sciences (IAHS), the 1988 Horton Medal from AGU, election to the National Academy of Engineering in 1982, the Bowie Medal of AGU in 1994, and the Stockholm Water Prize in 1997. To honor his long-lasting contributions to hydrology, the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Sciences, Inc. (CUAHSI) established in 2008 the Peter S. Eagleson Lecture in Hydrologic Sciences.
