AGU Distributed Sensing Technical Committee

Welcome to the Distributed Sensing Technical Committee!

This is a new group at AGU that is committed to growing opportunities for advancing the science and applications of distributed sensing across all areas of earth science.  Members from any AGU Section are therefore encouraged to join the Committee.

If you are interested in joining the Technical Committee, please contact the Committee Secretary (Aleksei Nelaev) with: (i) your name, (ii) affiliation, (iii) desired role on the committee, and (iv) [optional] contributions or projects you would like to advance through the Committee.

The scope of the Committee includes sensor networks, distributed (fiber optic) sensing, geophysics, and remote sensing.

Detailed information can be found in the Committee Charter.

COMMITTEE NEWSLETTER & WEB REQUESTS

We are happy to share our first community newsletter (April issue)!

If you would like to contribute to future information for the newsletter you can submit it with this Google form.

COMMITTEE MAILING LIST

To subscribe to the Committee mailing list and receive a regular newsletter and other updates, please contact the Committee Secretary (Aleksei Nelaev). Please note, if you are a Committee member, you already should be in the mailing list.

You are also free to share your relevant DS-related news, updates and announcements via this mailing list. To do it, you must simply send an email to distributed_sensing@gaggle.email, and every member of this list will get the email.

COMMITTEE CALENDAR

Upcoming deadlines and relevant events are available via the Committee calendar.

Committee Goals

Goals of the Technical Committee include but are not limited to:

a. Promoting the distribution of relevant research, data, and advancements in distributed sensing across AGU sections, journals, and conferences.

b. Interdisciplinary integration ensuring that knowledge of distributed sensing systems and applications are recognized and shared across disciplines within AGU.

c. Establishing the committee as a hub for standards and best practices – a central entity for collecting, refining, and promoting best practices in distributed sensing.

d. Supporting educational activities to promote distributed sensing knowledge by creating accessible, engaging content to educate the AGU community on topics related to distributed sensing in geophysics.

e. Act as a Resource for Grant Proposals or Other Activities by providing investigators opportunities to link their work to broader national or international initiatives (e.g., strengthening the Broader Impacts section of proposals submitted to the US National Science Foundation).

f. Supporting student and early career involvement and recognizing excellence to engage students and early-career professionals in the distributed sensing community and recognize their contributions, particularly through the Outstanding Student Presentation Awards (OSPA).

Committee Membership

The Technical Committee on Distributed Sensing consists of participants from all fields represented by the AGU who use diverse technologies to investigate earth processes including, but not limited to, fiber optic sensing (e.g., DAS, DTS, DSS), wireless sensor networks, near surface geophysics, and satellite-based remote sensing. Membership is open to all AGU members who are interested in contributing to the development and dissemination of distributed sensing technologies and their application, regardless of nationality, race, sexual orientation, religion, or the level of formal education.

Committee Meetings

Full meetings of the Technical Committee will be held each year at the Fall Meeting of the AGU.  Executive meetings will be held at least three times per year (spring, summer, and fall) to aid in coordination and planning of Committee activities. Additional Executive or Full Committee meetings may be called at the discretion of the Chair.  Subcommittees and working groups will meet as needed to achieve their goals, but no less than one meeting per year in addition to the full Committee meeting. All meetings should be reported to the Secretary at least two weeks prior to the event to allow for dissemination of meeting details.
