Hydro JEDI - About Us

About Us

Sooyeon Yi (co-chair), Dan Myers (co-chair, personal capacity)

Who: We are an open group of volunteers at all career levels who are passionate about advancing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) in the hydrologic sciences.

Where: Our committee serves the Hydrology Section, which is one scientific section of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), an international organization of Earth and space scientists. We routinely collaborate with other AGU sections and organizations toward common goals.

What: We were formed in 2021 as a response to the 2020 white paper authored by members of the AGU hydrology community. This white paper, along with ongoing strategic planning, guides all of the actions of our committee. Our overarching goal is to bring Hydrology Section members and leaders together to make actionable change towards a more equitable, diverse, inclusive, and just community.

When: We organize events and programs at the AGU Annual Meetings in December, and also meet monthly to plan and coordinate outreach activities throughout the year.

Why: We are committed to helping members in our section who are most vulnerable feel welcome in the hydrology community, including students, early career scientists, international scholars, and researchers from marginalized backgrounds.

How: At AGU Annual Meetings, we bring together Hydrology Section members and leaders for a Town Hall, where we discuss important JEDI topics. Also at AGU Annual Meetings, we coordinate a learning session with a cross-section AGU working group to discuss common themes for overcoming JEDI struggles. Throughout the year, we engage in monthly outreach activities including Hydrology Section newsletter announcements, website updates, promoting our group to new members, and planning our conference events.

Come join us! We invite you to support us in our work. Please email aguhydrojedi@gmail.com to get on our email list and attend our monthly meetings.
