Eric Wood

Eric F. Wood

Eric F. Wood was an inspiring leader in the hydrologic sciences who pioneered macroscale hydrologic modeling. He studied civil engineering at the University of British Columbia and received his doctorate from MIT in 1974. He spent two years at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg, Austria and then joined the faculty at Princeton University in 1976, where he spent his entire academic career before retiring in 2019.

Early in his career, his research was focused on systems analysis as applied to hydrology. As hydrology evolved as a branch of Earth Science, he published a groundbreaking series of papers with Beven, Famiglietti, Sivapalan, and Band in the 1980s that examined how the hydrologic response of catchments scaled with drainage area and advanced the concept of Representative Elementary Areas (REA).

In the 1980s and 1990s he turned his attention to remote sensing applications in hydrology, and macroscale hydrologic modeling. When planning for NASA’s Earth Observing System (EOS) began in the 1970s, he recognized that remote sensing could provide measurements—and hence process insights—at scales larger than the relatively small catchments to which most hydrological models were then applicable. He also recognized that the models of the land surface then incorporated in weather and climate models were too rudimentary to represent land-atmosphere interactions properly. His insights led to the development of the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) macroscale hydrology model, which continues to be applicable to global simulations of large continental river basins. In the early 2000s, he became interested in the possibilities for much higher resolution application of hydrological models than has been the case in the past. His 2012 WRR paper (with other workshop participants) led to an entire area of research in “hyper-resolution” land surface models.

As an educator, Eric had a huge impact on the professional development of more than 30 Ph.D. students, as well as a greater number of postdocs, research staff, and visitors. Over the course of his career, he was an author or co-author of almost 400 journal articles, and the recipient of 17 major awards including the AGU Horton Medal, the EGU Wegener Medal, and the AMS Charney Medal. He was a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society of Canada, and the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, and was president of the AGU hydrology section from 2012-2014.
