Feb 2020 Newsletter

Greetings from your Biogeosciences Section Leaders,

We really enjoyed seeing many of you at the 2019 Fall Meeting in San Francisco, where we celebrated AGU’s Centennial with popular and engaging sessions highlighting the Biogeosciences community, and at the Centennial Theatre along with our Earth-Covering neighbours. At the Biogeosciences Luncheon we recognized our section awardees, and continued the celebrations at a well-attended and memorable evening mixer. Thanks to everyone who contributed! Check out our section website for photos.

Award season! Now is the time to nominate a deserving colleague for an award. March 15 is the deadline for all AGU Fellows nominations and Union Awards, Medals and Prizes, such as the Macelwane Medal and the Simpson Medal. Here are some useful tips for preparing a strong nomination.

For the Biogeosciences section awards,  nominations are due April 15 via this link:

Hilker Early Career Award for Excellence in Biogeosciences

Sulzman Award for Excellence in Education and Mentoring

You may also nominate a colleague to present the 2020 Carl Sagan Lecture, given by a scientist who embodies Carl Sagan’s interest in astrobiology and skills in science communication. Contact Elise Pendall, section president.

Section Elections will be held this year and we are recruiting nominees for President-elect and Secretary. If you are interested in being considered for Section leadership, please contact Ariel Anbar, chair of the Section's nominating committee, or Elise.

We are also looking for a Web Master to help with editing and posting content on the new Biogeosciences Section web page! This is your chance to help the section in promoting our diverse research community working at the interface between life science and Earth system science. Please nominate your interest by emailing Elise.

As always, we welcome your suggestions and questions and participation in YOUR AGU.

Sincerely,

Elise Pendall (President), Margaret Torn (President-Elect), Jennifer Pett-Ridge (Secretary)
