Education Section Newsletter | February 2023 Edition

A Message from Education Section President Kristen St John:

It is an honor to step into the role of President of the AGU Education Section. I know I have big shoes to fill, too! Past President, Tanya Furman, was a tireless leader for our section and a valued mentor. Her direct and insightful knowledge about how AGU works, and the opportunities and challenges in moving Education initiatives forward were––and continue to be––invaluable. Tanya knows she is not off the hook yet. As one of the leaders of our canvassing committee she is working to bring honors and recognition to educators and to grow awareness of education research and impact in the broader AGU community. Thank you to Tanya for being a tireless advocate for Education in AGU, for providing practical advice to me and other volunteer leaders in our section, for establishing the Honor an Educator campaign, and for embracing the breadth of who we are as an Earth and Space science education community.

While many of our members are educators at colleges and universities, our section is also the professional society home for informal and museum educators and K-12 educators. We now have working groups for these areas. Additionally, we have working groups for students and early career educators, for geoscience education research, and for DEI in Education. We are also in the process of forming a working group on International Engagement. One of the section goals moving forward is to empower working groups to host resources and/or programming for our members beyond the Fall Meeting. To kick off this effort, our section will be hosting a webinar on the ENGAGE Program in April. Please read more below about this excellent resource and register for the event!

Engage with Eos: Science News & Professional Development Opportunities

Eos, AGU’s science news magazine, now features Eos News: Geoscience and Global Events, or ENGAGE, which offers a selection of articles for use in high school and undergraduate classroom activities. ENGAGE articles are supplemented with audio, maps, and links to Teach the Earth to find related peer-reviewed activities. Eos also offers Spanish and Chinese translations and publishes brief reading comprehension quizzes each week.

On Thursday, April 6 at 2 pm ET, join a free one-hour webinar hosted by AGU’s Education Section to learn about Eos and walk through the ENGAGE resource. Register for the webinar at: https://forms.gle/MNjofVvV3TEKXEUL8 (please copy and paste this link into your browser if you receive an error message).

Earth Educator Rendezvous 2023 attendees are encouraged take a deeper dive with a three-day workshop on ENGAGE and building effective geoscience activities with Teach the Earth.

AGU 2023 Honors

We recognize excellence! The 2023 AGU Honors nomination cycle is officially open––honors include the Union Awards, Medals, and Prizes, Union Fellows, and Section Honors programs. We are happy to announce that 2023 marks the third year of the Education Section’s Dorothy LaLonde Stout Education Lecture award, presented annually to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to Earth and space science education and outreach.

Review the complete list of Honors here, and consider nominating qualified colleagues, mentors, peers, early career individuals, and students!

Please direct general questions to honors@agu.org, and questions about Education Section honors to Tanya Furman at furman@psu.edu.

Build a Bridge

The AGU Bridge Program seeks to recruit students from historically marginalized backgrounds into geoscience graduate programs. This program aims to support eligible students by providing access to a free common geosciences graduate school application shared between 45+ partner departments around the country. The Bridge Program and its partners are committed to creating an inclusive culture within the greater Earth and space sciences community, and to improving geoscience education experiences for all students.

The application portal and more information about the Bridge Program can be accessed by visiting the AGU Bridge Program website. The application deadline is 15 March 2023.

K-12 Working Group Survey

The K12 Working Group of the AGU Education Section serves the K-12 community (and its international equivalents) in the AGU Education Section, including those who teach in K-12 settings, and anyone interested in formal or informal K-12 education. To serve you effectively, we ask for your participation in this needs survey: https://forms.gle/kBCEMg1Fz9xqNEfTA (please copy and paste this link into your browser if you receive an error message).

We greatly appreciate those of you who have provided your insights in the survey. However, if you have not completed the survey, we hope you will take 10 minutes to do so soon. The results of this survey will inform our plans on how best to serve our members.

Please note that all responses are anonymous, unless you provide us with your contact information at the end of the survey. If you have questions about the survey or the AGU Education Section K-12 Working Group, please contact Missy Holzer at missy.holzer@gmail.com.  Thank you for your responses and your time!

Join the DBER Discussion

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER) group will host its second X-DBER conference April 3-5, 2023. This fully virtual meeting encourages collaboration between researchers from a variety of STEM disciplines, and facilitates the sharing of research at multiple educational levels. Participants will have the opportunity to present their work to a global audience, and discuss the conversion of research into classroom practice.
