The AGU Biogeosciences Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee is providing 2023 Fall Meeting Travel Grants to help increase the diversity among Biogeosciences attendees, by covering costs associated with attending the meeting, virtually or in-person. Awards will be need-based and up to $1,000. Awards are reserved for applicants who identify as members of underrepresented or underserved communities, have financial need, and who might otherwise not be able to attend the meeting.

Applications will close October 13th, 2023.

Criteria and Requirements

The AGU Biogeosciences DEI Travel Grants are reserved for applicants who identify as being from underrepresented or underserved backgrounds, have financial need, and who might otherwise not have the opportunity to attend the meeting. Qualified applicants will be reviewed based on the following criteria:

  1. Are a current AGU member or will ben AGU member before receipt of the Award

  2. Have submitted a Fall Meeting abstract must include abstract reference number in the application

  3. Be the presenting author at the Fall Meeting

  4. Demonstrate scientific merit in the abstract presented

  5. Career stage, with preference to early career members (<10 years from receiving terminal degree). Note that AGU also hosts a travel grant program for students.

Recipients attending Fall Meeting in-person

In-person attendees must provide documentation by November 2023 confirming that the US is authorizing travel from their home country. A grant up to $1,000 USD will be disbursed to reimburse costs associated with attending Fall Meeting. Eligible expenses include, but are not limited to, meeting registration, housing accommodations, travel expenses, visa fees, poster printing fees, personal expenses, etc. In-person attendees are requested to participate in the Biogeosciences Section-wide events at the Fall Meeting and will be asked to submit a brief written report after the conclusion of Fall Meeting.

Recipients attending Fall Meeting virtually

It is assumed that virtual attendees will have lower costs than in-person attendees however applicants may still apply for up to $1,000 USD for eligible expenses. Eligible expenses include purchasing or renting technology (WiFi hotspot, laptop, laptop accessories, computer software), transportation to access technology, housing to access technology, dependent care, unpaid leave/lost wages, etc. Virtual attendees are requested to participate in Fall Meeting program offerings, plus submit a brief written report.
