Registration Open for 2026 Gordon Research Conference and Seminar in Geobiology

All geobiology colleagues are invited to attend the 2026 Gordon Research Conference (GRC) in Geobiology. The conference will be held 11-16 January, 2026 in Ventura, California. Applications are due by 13 December, 2025 - Apply Here. Please apply early, as the meeting may become full before the deadline.

This year’s GRC theme is “Geobiology and Planetary Change: Understanding Earth and Life’s Progression,” which will cover a range of areas, including genomic perspectives on evolution, paleobiology, subsurface microbiology, archaea and the origin of eukaryotes, taphonomy, dark oxygen, and much more.

We also warmly welcome graduate students, post-docs, and early career researchers to attend the 2026 Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) in Geobiology immediately preceding the GRC on 10-11 January, 2026 (same location). Abstracts for oral presentations at GRS sessions are due by 5 October, 2025 - Apply Here. The theme of the GRS is “Exploring the Dynamics Between Biology and Planetary Change Across Earth’s Past, Present and Future,” which will feature sessions on paleontological and geochemical insights into the evolution of life and the environment, how microbial processes shape our modern surroundings, and the applications of geobiology to climate change and astrobiology.

Please let us know if you have any questions. We hope to see you in Ventura!

The DEI Travel Grant Submission Deadline is Extended to 17 September

The AGU Biogeosciences DEI committee is pleased to offer the AGU Annual Meeting DEI Travel Grant. With many incredible applications in past years, this competitive award was created to resource outstanding diverse members of the AGU Biogeosciences community by providing a grant of up to $1500 (with a minimum award amount of the cost of graduate student early bird registration) for travel or costs related to attending the Annual Meeting. Applications are now open and will be due 17 September. Top applicants will: (1) provide diverse perspective and have been highly involved in DEI initiatives; (2) demonstrate how the meeting will benefit the scientists’ career; (3) present research that is of broad interest to the biogeoscience community and impactful; (4) demonstrate that the award is important for the scientist to attend the meeting and that there is sufficient additional support to match this award.

New Ways to Engage! Join a Biogeosciences Section Technical Committee!

The Soils Processes and Critical Zone Technical Committee (within both Hydrology and Biogeosciences AGU sections) promotes the understanding of soils at the interface of biogeochemistry, critical zone science, and hydrology within AGU. Our aims are to broaden understanding of critical functions and ecosystem services of soils in Earth Systems and integrate the interests of soils and CZ across AGU sections and across societies. For more information about our committee and ways to become involved (e.g., joining our community, organizing AGU topic sessions and social events), please visit our website or reach out to the committee chairs, Salvatore Calabrese and Yakun Zhang. The committee is planning its next virtual meeting for the second half of September, so this would be a great time to reach out!
