Thank You to Our Section Sponsors

The Biogeosciences Executive Committee sends a big thank you to our sponsors for supporting our members in 2024. As a section, we are fortunate to receive yearly support from Springer Biogeochemistry  and New Phytologist. Their support allows us to provide travel grants to early career members to enable their attendance at the AGU meeting. This year we were able to provide 6 Caregiver Grants and 6 DEI Early Career Grants via a combination of these sponsorship funds and our section funds. We and our members thank you!

A Fond Farewell and a Warm Welcome: Executive Committee Transition

A note from outgoing President Colleen Hansel: As I step down as President from the AGU Biogeosciences section, I want to thank the amazing Executive Committee I had the pleasure of working with over the past two years. I’m proud of the activities that we have accomplished together, including continuing to build and support our early career community through career panels, networking events, and townhalls, to name a few. These activities were due to the tireless dedication of our Executive Committee volunteers. I cherish the time I had getting to know our section members at these events and particularly at our now coveted Fall Meeting Biogeosciences Reception! One of my proudest accomplishments as your section President has been strengthening the ties between our flagship journal, JGR: Biogeosciences, and our section. Our latest collaboration is a special issue that will spotlight emerging early-career pioneers in biogeosciences – keep an eye out for that! As I transition to Past President of the section, I wish Emily Bernhardt a fantastic term as President. And, welcome to President-Elect Rodrigo Vargas and incoming Secretary Kate Heckman. Have a great term!

A note from outgoing Secretary Tana Wood: I would like to echo outgoing President Collen Hansel’s words in thanking the Biogeosciences executive committee and section leaders for all that they do. It has truly been an honor to have been a part of this team of fantastic scientists these past two years, and to have had the opportunity to give back to the AGU Biogeosciences community. There are times in our careers when we know that what we are doing has impact beyond the science that we produce, and serving as AGU Biogeosciences Secretary has been one of those moments for me. The section hosts activities that bring the Biogeosciences community together (e.g., the Annual Biogeosciences Mixer), that contribute to lowering barriers to participation (e.g., student travel awards, career panels), and that honor our outstanding scientists (e.g., section awards), all of which move us toward a scientific community that is more inclusive, safe, and collaborative. As I step down from my role as Secretary, I know that the section is in great hands and will continue to do great things!!

It is AGU Award & Honors Nomination Season!

Consider nominating a colleague, mentor or student… or yourself, for an AGU award!

Receiving an honor or becoming an AGU Fellow gives the recipient’s career a big boost and shows that their community recognizes their contributions. Let’s cast a broad net of nominations this year!
  • The deadline to submit nominations for AGU Union Medals, Awards, and Prizes Program is 28 February at 11:59 PM ET.
  • The deadline to submit nominations for Biogeosciences Section Awards, Scholarships and Grants and the Union Fellows Program is 13 March at 11:59 PM ET.
Visit this Honors webpage for more information on the awards and honors and the nomination process.

Some useful tips:
  • We recommend that you start putting your nomination package together at least one month ahead of time (January 28, 2025).
  • Does the process seem overwhelming? Let us help…the B-section’s DEI committee put together valuable resources to help with preparing a nomination package. See their valuable YouTube “How-To” series
Union Fellow
Union Fellows from each section are celebrated each year. They recognize AGU members who have made exceptional contributions to Earth and space science through a breakthrough, discovery, or innovation in their field. AGU Fellows must demonstrate scientific eminence in the Earth and space sciences through achievements in research.

Biogeosciences Section Awards
  1. The Sulzman Award for Scientific Excellence Through Education and Mentoring
Recognizes significant contributions as a role model and mentor for the next generation of biogeoscientists, especially those under-represented in Earth sciences.

  2. Thomas Hilker Early Career Award for Excellence in Biogeosciences
