Dear Colleagues,
We would like to bring to your attention the "GC043. Enhanced Rock Weathering for Carbon Dioxide Removal: From Soils to the Ocean" session at the AGU 2023 Fall Meeting. The deadline for abstract submission is August 2. The submission link for our session is below:
We're excited to share our invited speakers:
David Beerling – Professor in the School of Biosciences at the University of Sheffield
Maya Almaraz –Associate Research Scholar in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at Princeton University
Session Description:
Higher atmospheric CO2 levels have led to global warming and multidimensional environmental and socioeconomic crises. In achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming within 1.5–2 °C, a range of potential carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approaches, including enhanced rock weathering (ERW), are being considered. ERW manually accelerates rock weathering by applying crushed rocks to soils, but its net removal capacity and impact on the soil/river/ocean systems are uncertain. This session solicits contributions of both fundamental and applied research on 1) quantifying ERW rate in various geologic, topographic, and climatic settings, 2) exploring ERW's impact on soil property and plant growth, 3) investigating its influence on river chemistry, 4) understanding its interplay with other land-based CDR approaches, and 5) studying the ocean response to ERW over different time scales. The session aims to build a comprehensive understanding of ERW's realistic efficiency for CDR across spatiotemporal scales.
Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to your valuable contributions. If you have any inquiries or need further assistance, please feel free to contact us.
