    A position as Associate Professor in Sedimentology is available at the University of Oslo (UiO), Department of Geosciences.

    The position is organized under the Geology and Geophysics Section. The section has thirteen professors and associate professors, several adjunct professor and a large number of Postdocs and Ph.D. fellows and support staff. The position will be placed within the "basin-group"; the research focus is on sedimentary basins, from their genesis, to infill, to post-depositional processes.

    The research group has a considerable project portfolio financed by the Norwegian Research Council, the European Union and national and international industry partners. An extensive cooperation with national and international research institutions is established. The sections is also a part of a Centre for Environmental Friendly Energy FME NCCS Norwegian Carbon Capture Centre.

    Job description
    Our aim is to expand our research profile in sedimentary systems and processes and the distribution of depositional environments in time and space, including basin fill dynamics and modern processes. The position shall strengthen our research by adding process-oriented sedimentology from modern and ancient source-to-sink, also relevant for related fields like environmental geology and quaternary geology/geomorphology.

    We seek a highly motivated candidate in the field of processes in clastic sedimentary systems that will bring experience from coupling modern depositional systems with ancient, lithified strata using modern techniques from both field- and lab-based datasets. The appointed candidate will bridge the gap between large-scale sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy, and near surface geochemical and compactional processes. Placing the group in a leading position where sedimentological research is carried out on every scale. A background from quantitative and qualitative mapping of inherent variabilities in natural systems, spatially and temporally, modern and ancient, will be advantageous.

    The candidate should strengthen the section's existing expertise in field observations and use of analytical methods, with big data and machine learning techniques.
