“Unearth a Story” this Summer!

Did you know that each year the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) identifies a summer reading theme to prevent the “summer slump” in reading and learning? This year's theme, “Unearth a Story,” focuses on dinosaurs, paleontology, and archaeology––it is a perfect opportunity for geoscientists to share their passion with young audiences. Visit the CSLP website to learn more about the program and the intention of the theme. Next, consider contacting your local library to determine whether they are participating in the program. If they are, ask how you might get involved. If they are not participating, suggest that they might, and that you may be interested in participating. Participation may include reading a book with children, hosting a show-and-tell with your favorite rocks and minerals, performing a grade-level appropriate activity related to your field of study, etc. However you decide to participate, have some summer fun recruiting our next generation of geoscientists!

New Out-of-This-World Coloring Book from NASA

NASA and the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) have partnered to develop a new educational coloring book about the Sun: “Journey Through the Heliosphere: The Sun-Earth System in Color." The book's 28 coloring pages include topics like the Sun's magnetic field, solar wind, aurora, eclipses, and how the Sun influences Earth. Read more about the book in this short article, and download a copy for free!
