    Hello Geoscience Instructors

I wanted to let you know about two EarthScope workshop options this summer related to teaching field geophysics instrument methods to all levels of undergraduates.

In-person Instructor Workshop: Teaching Near-surface Geophysics to Undergraduates from Intro to Majors

    • Tue-Thu July 29-31, 2025

    • Colorado School of Mines campus, Golden, CO

    • Details & Registration at https://serc.carleton.edu/getsi/workshops/Summ2025_field/index.html

    • This workshop provides the foundation for Earth science instructors to integrate near-surface geophysics instrumentation and methods into their undergraduate courses. Featured methods will be ground penetrating radar (GPR), active seismic, electrical resistivity, and real-time kinematic GPS/GNSS surveying.

    • Will provide hotel accommodation and food during the workshop and up to $750* towards travel expenses (flights and ground transportation) for accepted participants.

Virtual Instructor Workshop: Teaching in the field with SfM and RTK-GPS

    • Mon-Fri August 11-15, 2025

    • Virtual (synchronous and asynchronous components)

    • Details & Registration at https://serc.carleton.edu/getsi/workshops/2025virtual_gps-sfm/index.html

    • Workshop participants will learn practical approaches for creating georeferenced point clouds of high-resolution topography data using Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry and Global Positioning System (GPS) -- which can be used to address geoscience research questions. Methods are appropriate for undergraduate summer field camps and academic-year courses with field components.

    • Participants will be sent a pair of GPS survey instruments to use during and the week after the workshop. Multiple participants from the same institution are encouraged.

    Both workshops:

    • Application Deadline: April 18, 2025

    • Community college and introductory-level instructors, as well as majors-level instructors, are all encouraged to apply. Later-stage graduate students with significant teaching responsibility are also eligible.

    • You can apply to both opportunities.
