  • 1.  AGU25 Granular Session: Call for abstracts

    Posted 07-28-2025 04:07
    Dear Colleagues,

We are excited to share our AGU session "Geophysical Granular Flows and Sediment Transport: Bridging Grain-Scale Mechanics and Continuum Modeling" (EP018)

Invited Speakers: Nathalie M. Vriend, Alban Sauret, Eric Deal

    Session Descriptions:
Earth and planetary surfaces are covered by granular material that may flow under the action of gravity, interaction with fluids such as air or water, or other geophysical processes. These geophysical granular flows and sediment transport phenomena are at the heart of landscape dynamics (hillslope creep, riverbed evolution, coastal erosion), pattern formation (grain sorting and segregation, dunes, ripples), and geohazards (landslide, debris flow, snow avalanche). A fundamental challenge lies in the multiscale nature of granular materials rendering a continuum description difficult to achieve. Recent advances in high-resolution imaging and particle-resolved numerical simulations allowed for insights into particle-scale mechanisms. However, research carried out at the particle-scale has yet to be harmonized into a consistent theoretical body able to match field and laboratory observations. We invite field, experimental and numerical research from particle to macroscopic scales to address this theme's open questions.

Conveners: Lu Jing, Rui M.L. Ferreira, Kimberly M. Hill, Olivia Meng, Qiong Zhang, Benjamin Alessio

    Dear Colleagues,

We invite abstract submissions for our AGU25 session EP030 titled:

"River Resilience and Hydrologic Connectivity: Integrating Morphodynamic Insights and Climate Adaptation Across Scales"

    Conference Venue and Dates:
    New Orleans, Louisiana | 15–19 December 2025

    Abstract Submission Deadline:
    Wednesday, 30 July 2025
    Submission Portal: https://agu.confex.com/agu/agu25/prelim.cgi/Session/250375

    Session Overview:
This session highlights emerging approaches to understanding and predicting river resilience and hydrologic connectivity under the influence of changing climate and human pressures. It invites contributions that leverage:

    • Field-based investigations and fluvial geomorphology
    • High-resolution remote sensing, drone and LiDAR-based surveys
    • Hydrodynamic modeling and AI/ML-based simulation tools
    • Sediment transport studies and channel morphological adjustments
    • Groundwater–surface water interactions relevant to ecological and baseflow sustainability

The session aims to encourage interdisciplinary research and facilitate actionable knowledge for climate-adaptive river basin management and sustainable planning.

    Invited Speakers:

Prof. Subashisa Dutta, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati

Professor Dutta is a distinguished researcher in the fields of river hydraulics, sediment transport, flood modeling, and computational morphodynamics. His work integrates satellite remote sensing, GIS, and hydrological modeling, with a focus on large river systems.

Dr. Vinay Chembolu, Indian Institute of Technology Jammu
Dr. Chembolu's research spans theoretical and experimental fluid mechanics, flow–vegetation interactions, and environmental hydraulics. His recent work explores the dynamics of vegetated channel flows and their relevance to river system behavior and ecohydraulic design.

    Session Conveners:
Dr. Chandan Pradhan, National Institute of Technology Karnataka
Dr. Amrutha Suresh, University of Padua, Italy
Dr. Laveti N V Satish, National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli
Dr. Sushree Swagatika Swain, University of California San Diego
Dr. Aparimita Priyadarshini Naik, Colorado School of Mines
