Meeting Highlights

Here one may find highlights from the 2018 Fall Meeting.

Tuesday

The Giants of Tectonophysics session is not to be missed! Mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 11th from 10:20 am – 12:20 pm (202A in the convention center) and 4-6 pm (Marriott Marquis Liberty N-P) to listen to invited talks about the geoscientists that contributed to our understanding of tectonophysics over the last century.

Tectonophysics and Seismology Business Meeting & Luncheon (12:30-1:30 PM) with featured speaker Marcia McNutt, NAS President, and former AGU President, Science Editor-in-Chief, and USGS Director, “Establishing trust with diverse audiences: Some ideas for fractured times” Online tickets are $20. Grand Hyatt Washington, Constitution Level, in Rooms A, B and Corridor B.

Wednesday

Be sure to catch the 2018 Birch Lecture. On Wednesday, December 12th from 4-6 pm at the Marriott Marquis Marquis 6, Dr. Carolina Lithgow-Bertelloni will be talking about how Earth’s deep interior affects the surface. Just prior to the lecture, will be the bestowal of the Paul G. Silver Award for Outstanding Scientific Service to Harold Tobin (University of Washington), and the Jason Morgan Award to Ylona van Dinther (Utrecht University). Marriott Marquis 6.

Thursday

Storycorps (4:30-6:00 PM, recording at the Marriott Marquis). Tectonophysics has been allotted a 90-min slot, where we can tell our stories for posterity. Each story takes 20 min to stage and record, so we have just four openings. You can have up to four participants (from any section) in the recording booth for your story. Questions? Don’t forget about the Tectonophysics Early Career event! This will take place on Thursday, December 13th from 6-7:30 pm at the Grand Hyatt Rooms D and E on the Independence level. This will be moderated by Lindy Elkins-Tanton (Univ. AZ) with brief sketches by five young scientists working at universities, government agencies, and consulting, insurance, and resource exploration companies. With refreshments, schmoozing, and a cash bar. Grand Hyatt Washington, Independence Level, Rooms D & E. And it’s free.

Friday

Centennial Plenary A Celebration of the Past and Discussion of the Future of Earth and Space Science (U53C), Twelve 4-min talks representing the Earth’s Interior. Ross Stein will present, “Earthquakes: The force that shapes and shakes the planet.” 12:30-1:30 PM, Walter E Washington Convention Center – Ballroom A-C.
