New SY Section Leadership and Volunteers

If you visit our Section’s website, you will notice a lot of changes!  The Science and SocietY (SY) Section continues to evolve and grow.

January 1 marked the beginning of Julie Vano’s term as Section President. Julie has been SY’s President-elect since January 2019 and helped transition SY into a AGU section from the Societal Impacts and Policy Sciences (SIPS) Focus Group, revising our statement of purpose and building our team.

Kevin Reed and Heidi Roop, our newly-elected Section President-elect and Secretary, respectively, also started their 2-year terms in January.

Kevin is an Associate Professor in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University and leads the Climate Extremes Modeling Group which investigates how societally-relevant extreme events may change in the future and develops new methodologies to better translate state-of-the-art science for climate adaptation applications and policies. Kevin, as a former AGU Congressional Science Fellow, is active in a variety of service AGU positions and beyond. 

Heidi is an Assistant Professor of Climate Science and Extension Specialist at the University of Minnesota. Heidi also co-leads the Minnesota Climate Adaptation Partnership. Her research and Extension programs combine cutting-edge climate science, science communication and the principles of knowledge co-production to increase the use and integration of future climate change information in decision-making at a range of scales—from city, county and state to national and international levels. 

In addition to our elected leadership, the Section has assembled an Executive Committee of dedicated AGU member volunteers (SY leadership webpage). We now have track leads for each of the SY tracks, in addition to individuals that lead our honors, Fall Meeting, student, and liaison efforts. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with our volunteer leadership team and we hope that we can thank them in person for their efforts at the Fall Meeting in December.

We would also like to acknowledge the continued leadership of Maggie Walser, now the Section’s Past President. Maggie helped shepherd the growth of the Science and Society section. In addition, a huge thank you to Thushara Gunda, who was vital to Fall Meeting planning over the last couple of years!  Of note, these past two years involved celebrating AGU’s centennial and navigating a global pandemic, two years that required considerable last-minute planning, patience, and grace. Maggie and Thushara, we were so fortunate to have your leadership through this time!!
