About

The GeoHealth Early Career Researcher (ECR) Committee supports early career scientists - students, postdocs, junior faculty, and practitioners - by providing information and opportunities for professional development and building a community within the GeoHealth section. Since GeoHealth is a relatively new and interdisciplinary field, we seek to provide a space to learn about opportunities beyond what we might encounter in our own disciplinary home or department.
Please email our co-chairs at any time with questions about the ECR Committee or interest in getting involved.

Events

Our committee hosts virtual events throughout the year and in-person events at the AGU Annual Meeting.

Virtual Events

We host periodic webinars with sessions focused on professional development or presentations by early career researchers. During the professional development sessions, attendees learn about career trajectories, have the opportunity to discuss career development advice, and learn best practices in science communication, grant writing, and other topics. Presentations by early career researchers provide an opportunity to present work to a wider audience, expand professional networks, and learn about a wide range of GeoHealth research areas.

In-Person Events

At the AGU Annual Meeting, the ECR Committee hosts networking opportunities and career discussions. Consult the program for the next Annual Meeting to attend in person events with the GeoHealth Section and ECR Committee.

Competitions

We host annual competitions for early career researchers to practice their skills and showcase their work. Previous competitions have focused on elevator pitches and data visualization. To learn more about GeoHealth ECR Committee Competitions, join the GeoHealth section of AGU to receive communication updates.

Resources

AGU has a fantastic website with resources for early career scientists. We encourage you to check it out! Other tips and tricks we recommend are:

  • Apply for travel grants to meetings (both from your university and professional societies)
  • Apply for awards (both from your university and professional societies)
  • Propose a session at a meeting
  • Get involved in your department or a professional society
  • Check out our (growing) lists below for finding more resources
