Section Finances

Section Funds
Your Section's fund is managed by AGU's Finance team and is updated periodically throughout the year. Staff will provide updated financial reports for you on a quarterly basis to help you understand your Section's financial health so you can appropriately plan your activities.  Your Section's fund is made up of 4 components.

  • Revenue - Typically revenue consists of contributions from your members, sponsorship income and other contributions to your Section's fund.
  • Expenses - Your expenses will come from gifts, prizes and awards for your section's honors, travel grant support, meeting costs (food and beverage, audio visual, etc.)
  • Net Operations- This will give you a clear picture of the total dollars available to you in your Section fund
  • Net Assets - This is where you will see the $5K Board Designated funds listed to offset your designated use of those funds.

  • $50 Subsidy per person for your Business Meeting and Reception/Luncheon at Fall Meeting
  • Up to $5,000 on student and early career activities

Sections may at anytime submit a request to AGU-Sectionhelp@agu.org or to their concierge to access funds for Section-related activities. 
There is a two step process for getting reimbursed from AGU. 
1. Online Form - payee information via our vendor form so that AGU can process the reimbursement via check or ACH payment. 
2. Submit your receipts/invoices with a brief description of the expense to your Section's concierge copying the AGU finance team at payables@agu.org

AGU makes every effort to process reimbursements in a timely fashion, but during peak times (i.e. immediately following Fall Meeting, during end-of-year activities) it can take up to 30 days for those reimbursements to be processed.
Section Sponsorships

The AGU development team provides sections with helpful resources to assist with securing sponsorship dollars from partner organizations to help fund section activities. For helpful tools in working to secure sponsorship for your Section, please visit the Sponsorship Toolkit.

Section Incentive Program

In 2015, AGU piloted a donor incentive program that provides unrestricted funding to Sections based on the number of qualified individual donations to any AGU fund by the group’s primarily affiliated members.

A contribution of $50 or greater is required to qualify as an individual donor. This contribution can be allocated to any AGU fund, not just Section funds. Funds from employer matching-gift programs will be credited toward the individual donor/employee.

Due to Sections’ varying membership sizes, the incentive program will be based on the rate of participation by members primarily affiliated with each group as of 31 December, not the total number of participating members.

The program’s financial incentives are as follows:

5% participation from primary affiliated members – $1,000 contribution from AGU to your Section
7% participation primary affiliated members – $2,000 contribution from AGU to your Section
10% participation primary affiliated members – $3,000 contribution from AGU to your Section
12% participation primary affiliated members – $4,000 contribution from AGU to your Section
15% or greater participation primary affiliated members – $5,000 contribution from AGU to your Section
