Registration for the 2026 Seismology Skill Building Workshop (SSBW) is open now through June 1, 2026!

The SSBW is a free, approximately 70-hour online course designed to build scientific computing and computational thinking skills through hands-on work with real seismic data. Participants invest roughly 5 to 6 hours per week, including a weekly webinar (or recorded equivalent), making it manageable alongside other summer commitments.

    Who should apply?

Anyone who wants to learn or brush up on beginner level computer programming with a seismology focus.

What do participants walk away with?

Completers receive a performance report certificate detailing module content, number of assignments completed, and average score per module, as well as a free micro-credential they can link to their LinkedIn profile.

According to the workshop participants from 2020 to 2024, more than 90% agreed with the fact that the workshop provided practical skills that they couldn't have learned elsewhere at the time; 70% participants think the workshop performance report/certificate helped them accomplish their career goals; and more than 85% participants would recommend this workshop to a friend or colleague.
