Thriving Earth Exchange helps scientists and communities form collaborative, impactful partnerships. Community science projects launched through Thriving Earth Exchange use science to advance community priorities and are part of a growing movement toward engaged, community-driven science.

We are currently seeking volunteers for the following project in Youngstonw, Ohio:

The residents at Youngstown seeks a scientific partner to plan and execute a sampling strategy for the surface water bodies of interest. The scientist(s) will conduct field verifications and identify suitable locations for sampling. The scientific partner will work with the Youngstown project team through 2020 and beyond as needed to complete an assessment of surface water quality in the Meander Creek, the Mahoning River, and associated tributaries. This will include sampling where necessary, preparing maps, and regular updates to the project team.

Desired Skills and Expertise
  • Background in environmental chemistry, environmental engineering, geology, and surface water quality
  • Experience with scientific sampling and study design strongly preferred
  • Ability to translate difficult science terminology for a lay audience
  • Outdoor enthusiast preferred but not required
  • Adept problem-solver and able to effectively convey results in written form
  • Willingness to connect science to local concerns
  • Relaxed, easy going personality with a good sense of humor
  • Strong listening and communication skills
  • Competent and open to new ideas
  • Strong listening and collaboration skills
  • Experience and/or desire to participate in community education, outreach and engagement
  • Public speaking skills
