Special Lectures

Overview

At the 2015 AGU Fall Meeting, the GEC Section sponsored a Special Lecture by Dr. James S. Famiglietti, Senior Water Scientist at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Pasadena, CA) and professor of Earth System Science and of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Irvine. The title of Dr. Famiglietti’s talk is “21st Century Global Freshwater Security: Can it Exist and Can Scientists Communicate the Challenges?”

Emerging Environmental Issues

At the 2012 AGU Fall Meeting, the GEC Section sponsored (with cosponsorship from 8 other sections of AGU) the first in a series of Special Lectures on topics of emerging environmental issues. The inaugural lecture was presented by Ken Caldeira, professor in the Department of Global Ecology, Carnegie Institution for Science, Stanford, California, on the topic “Ocean Acidification: Adaptive Challenge or Extinction Threat?”

Past & Contemporary Climate Change

While not a GEC-sponsored event, the current president of the GEC Section, Dr. Ellen Mosley-Thompson, did present the Charney Lecture at the 2010 AGU Fall Meeting on “Past and Contemporary Climate Change: Evidence for Earth’s Ice Cover”.

Abrupt Climate Change

At the 2013 AGU Fall Meeting, the GEC Section sponsored a “Special Lecture on Abrupt Climate Change in the Arctic (and Beyond): An Update”. The lecture, presented by Richard Alley, Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences in Penn State University’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.
