Understanding, managing and improving the natural environment is essential to improving human health and wellbeing around the world (Sustainable Development Goal 3), which in turn underpins many of the other Sustainable Development Goals. Conversely, environmental degradation threatens improvements made in health in recent years.

Improving health and wellbeing includes:

  • Improving access to good nutrition.
  • Reducing non-communicable diseases, such as cancers.
  • Tackling communicable illnesses, such as diarrhoea.
  • Improving access to mental health support.
  • Reducing losses and injuries during environmental shocks.

This requires integrated approaches to reduce air, water and soil pollution, understanding of environmental drivers of disease, and better managment of all forms of waste (e.g., from extractive industries, cities, and agriculture).

The 7th GfGD Annual Conference will explore how Earth and environmental science can help to deliver SDG 3, and other linked SDG targets. Bringing together speakers from diverse sectors and disciplines, we aim to increase understanding of the spectrum of work and research opportunities for those interested in the interface between Earth science, health and sustainable development.
