You are invited to submit an abstract for the 2024 AGU Nature-based Solutions Session NH018: Enhancing Resilience of Lowland Landscapes to Weather Extremes with Nature-Based Solutions
Nature-based Solutions (NbS) have emerged as a holistic approach addressing weather extremes (e.g., floods, droughts) mitigation by enhancing the natural functioning of anthropogenically modified landscapes, with additional benefits for biodiversity, climate, and society. By fostering inter- and trans-disciplinary dialogue and knowledge exchange, this session aims to discuss the application and effectiveness of NbS for mitigating natural water related hazards and risks in lowland environments, spanning from rural to urbanized floodplains and coastal plains. Key themes to be addressed include fundamental geomorphological, hydrological, and ecological principles underpinning NbS, the integration of NbS into built-environment infrastructure development, co-designing NbS with communities, the socio-economic implications of NbS, and the implementation of NbS, including upscaling and outscaling of existent projects. The session seeks to highlight technical aspects, challenges and opportunities, and emerging paradigms for NbS research at different scales, and to identify pathways to enhance social-ecological-technological resilience of lowland communities and landscapes with NbS.
