Natural disaster research sits at a crucial juncture between basic science and direct application to social and policy spheres. To fully understand the impacts of these hazards, linking understanding of the natural phenomena with the socioeconomic dimensions of vulnerability and exposure is critical. Continual conversations between hazards researchers and policy and emergency response professionals can optimize the implementation of scientific understanding into actions taken. Connecting hazard researchers with disaster response and planning creates a shared knowledge-base to tackle societal problems that are likely to be exacerbated by increasing population density in cities and anthropogenic climate change.
This session seeks to engage both researchers, emergency responders, aid organizations and policymakers in a discussion on effective practices to connect hazard science with policy. Submissions focusing on cross-disciplinary understanding of hazards, risk and mitigation strategies are particularly encouraged as well as lessons learned from existing efforts to inform policy within hazard science.
