AGU24 Updates: Section Gathering Receptions

This year, AGU will again provide support for Section Gathering Receptions that take place on Tuesday evening on December 10. Attendees MUST select tickets for the Section reception when registering for #AGU24, but will not be charged a fee for this event. Don’t forget!

The Education Section will host a Game Night following the reception. If you enjoy a good game with good company, stop by––more details to come!

Lateral Reading: Techniques for Evaluating Information in the Digital Age

While considering what new items to integrate into your 2024-2025 teaching, explore the activities and tools on the Lateral Reading-Model-Evidence Link Diagrams (LR-MEL) Project website. This project promotes students' civic and scientific evaluations of sources and alternative claims when confronted with controversial and/or complex socio-scientific issues in the Earth and environmental sciences.

On the website, you will find lateral reading resources to support students as they wade through the plethora of disinformation found when seeking facts. The website also houses resources to support students when they are presented with competing models, and encourages them to examine how evidence can point to the plausibility of one model over another. Materials from recent professional development events are available on the website and will assist you with ideas for integrating these materials into your courses. Happy exploring!

Celebrate the Moon with NASA

International Observe the Moon Night is a time to

come together with fellow Moon enthusiasts and

curious people worldwide. This year, the event will

take place on Saturday, September 14. Everyone on Earth is invited to learn about lunar science and

exploration, take part in celestial observations, and

honor cultural and personal connections to the Moon. This annual, worldwide public engagement event takes place when the Moon is close to first quarter – a great phase for evening observing.

You can participate in International Observe the Moon Night from wherever you are. Attend or organize a public engagement event or join in as an individual observer. Register today!

Thanks to NASA’s International Observe the Moon Night Coordinating Committee for submitting this item!

Seeking Volunteers for Bright STaRS

Every year, AGU invites middle and high school students to submit their research to the Bright STaRS program held in conjunction with the annual meeting. Hundreds of students participate. Organizing and supporting this program takes the efforts of multiple people––your assistance is needed! If you have the time and interest in assisting in the organizing and delivery of this inspiring program, please reach out to the Diana Ibarra, program chair, at Dlibarra@isf.edu.hk.
