Education Section Newsletter | March 2023 Edition

Support AGU

The Education Section extends its gratitude to all who donate––your contributions are what allow us to continue to enhance connectivity across all of the Earth and space sciences by providing educational expertise, scholarship, and partnership development with other organizations and the public. Your contributions to campaigns like Honor an Educator make it possible to enhance professional inclusivity for teachers and researchers around the world.

The Education Section welcomes your continued support! Please click here to learn more about the Honor an Educator campaign, and here to learn more about donating to AGU.

Session Submissions Open Now!

Join us in sunny San Francisco, California, this December 11-15 for AGU23! This year’s “Wide. Open. Science.” theme celebrates AGU’s commitment to increasing engagement, accessibility, and collaboration across the Earth and space sciences. Communication is key in all disciplines, and the Education Section always strives to foster new opportunities to share science with the global community. Share your science, and submit a session, workshop, or townhall proposal for AGU23 today! Submissions close on April 12.

Looking Ahead: AGU23 with the K-12 Working Group

December might seem like a distant future, but it is never too early to think about AGU’s annual meeting!  Here are three ways you can get involved in AGU23:

  1. If you plan on attending the meeting with your students for the Bright STaRS program, they should start thinking about and working on a research project to share.
  2. It would be wonderful to have sessions chaired by K-12 educators! Consider submitting a session proposal by April 12th.
  3. As soon as the sessions are identified, it will be time to submit abstracts. Consider sharing your innovative work in one of the Education sessions of the meeting!

Consider the Workshop

Looking to hone your educational and leadership skills? Consider submitting a proposal for a learning workshop! Learning workshops are professional development opportunities for members attending AGU23. Proposals must include specific learning outcomes, a plan for participant engagement, targeted audience information, and preferred seat size as well as the other scheduling information. Workshops should align to one of the 5 focuses: Practical Skills, Open Science, Community Science, Science Communication and Advocacy, or Inclusive Science. This is a great opportunity to consider opportunities or offerings that support your section membership and beyond with timely, relevant professional development!

Questions? Contact learning@agu.org. Stay posted––submissions are opening soon!

ENGAGE with Eos: Teaching Science

Engaging students with accurate scientific information is important for developing Earth and space science literacy and combating misinformation. Join AGU Eos Publisher, Heather Goss, and Eos Science Education Advisor, Kyle Fredrick, for a free, one-hour webinar hosted by the AGU Education Section to learn about how Eos articles selected for the ENGAGE program can be used in teaching and learning in undergraduate and high school classes. ENGAGE articles are supplemented with audio, maps, and links to Teach the Earth to find related peer-reviewed activities.

Save the date! Join us on Thursday, April 6 at 2 PM ET, by registering for the webinar at https://forms.gle/MNjofVvV3TEKXEUL8 (please copy and paste this link into your browser if you receive an error message).

Take the Next Step in Your Career

Mentoring365 matches students and early career professionals with experts in the Earth and space sciences (ESS) to exchange ideas, create connections and build a more inclusive ESS community.  Effective mentorship benefits everyone involved. With Mentoring365, mentees can connect with more than 400 mentors with a wealth of knowledge to help them thrive as ESS professionals. Mentors develop leadership skills while lifting up a younger generation.  Your mentorship experience can be customized to fit your own needs and availability. Learn more.

Mix Your Models

Mixture modeling is a quantitative method for exploring diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM student experiences. UC Santa Barbara is currently accepting applications for their one-year mixture modeling program, which provides virtual training and mentoring to help fellows integrate this modeling in their own research. If you are an early career, discipline-based educational researcher (DBER) interested in learning how to apply mixture models to your equity-focused research questions, consider applying to participate in this unique opportunity! For more information, please visit the program website or twitter (@mm4dbers).

Questions? Contact Dr. Karen Nylund-Gibson (mm4dbers@education.ucsb.edu). Applications are due by April 15!

Practical Collaboration: Community Science Meets Community Priorities

The AGU/AGI Heads and Chairs Program is pleased to announce the next installment in its free webinar and discussion seriesEquitably Addressing Community Priorities: Geoscientists and Communities co-creating tools and solutions. Join Thriving Earth Exchange team Director Natasha Udu-gama and Program Manager Maria Sharova as they discuss the values and principles that are the foundation of their community science approach to advancing the development and implementation of solutions that address community priorities related to climate change, natural hazards, and natural resources.

Register here to join the discussion on March 24, 2023 at 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM ET.
