Call for Student Representatives on the VGP Executive Committee

By Jessica Ball posted 10-05-2021 19:15

The VGP Executive Committee is currently seeking applicants for three student representatives (SR) - one each from Volcanology, Geochemistry and Petrology - and one early career representative (ECR). These persons will join the VGP ExComm in October, prior to the 2021 Fall Meeting, so they are able to gain initial experience in their roles prior to the 2022 year. These committee members represent the interests of all VGP students and early career scientists (PostDocs, Assistant Professors), and are responsible for the programming and planning of VGP networking events at Fall Meeting each year. The experience gained both as a SR and an ECR helps scientists become more involved in the VGP community and expand their academic networks.

Applicants should be broadly interested in fostering community within the VGP section. Fall Meeting and the months leading up to it can be a stressful time for students and early career scientists. These positions offer the opportunity to make the Fall Meeting a more welcoming, inclusive environment. Some options for programming include writing workshops, coffee hours, non-academic career panels, or even a 'draw your research' workshop. Furthermore, events need not be limited to the week of Fall Meeting; they can occur year-round! The annual Trivia Night, an event jointly hosted by all Earth Interior sections and Planetary Sciences, has been a great way for students and early career scientists to interact and get to know each other.

If you are interested in applying, please provide a copy of your CV, a paragraph describing relevant leadership experience, and a paragraph describing either (a) an event you'd like to plan for Fall Meeting or (b) an idea you have to improve the scope of the SR and ECR roles. These documents should be sent to section President Dominique Weis (dweis@eoas.ubc.ca) and President-elect Costanza Bonadonna (costanza.bonadonna@unige.ch). If there are any questions about the SR position, please reach out to the current SR Matt Barickman (mbarickman@wustl.edu).
