William S. & Carelyn Y. Reeburgh Lecture

Basic Information

AGU has been William S. Reeburgh’s primary professional affiliation since 1968. Reeburgh was active in the OS and AS sections until the B section was formed. He served as editor of Global Biogeochemical Cycles for 6 years (1998-2004), and was President-Elect and President of the Biogeosciences section (7/04-7/08). He is an AGU Fellow (2001). The inaugural lecture was presented at the 2015 AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco, California.

The Reeburgh Lecture will be presented annually as part of the AGU Fall Meeting. In even numbered years the lecture will be presented as part of AGU’s Ocean Sciences Section’s programming and will concentrate on the topic of marine geochemistry. The lecturer will be invited to attend the Ocean Sciences Section Reception and the fund will act as a sponsor of the event.

In odd numbered years the lecture will be presented as part of AGU’s Biogeosciences Section’s programming and will concentrate on the topic of global biogeochemistry. The lecturer will be invited to attend the Biogeosciences Section reception and the Fund will act as a sponsor of the event.

Citation/Scope Statement: The Reeburgh lecture is given by a scientist who embodies William S. Reeburgh’s tradition of applying novel measurements to illuminate key issues in global biogeochemistry and marine geochemistry.

Lecture Includes:

  • Lecture Certificate
  • Announcement in Eos
  • AGU Fall Meeting Travel Reimbursement (2 nights hotel stay, AGU Meeting Registration, and airfare)
  • Invitation to present the Reeburgh Lecture at the AGU Fall Meeting during the lecture presentation year
  • Recognition at the AGU Fall Meeting during the lecture presentation year

Frequency: Presented annually.

Nomination Process & Requirements

All Section Named Lectures are not required to follow a nomination cycle process (i.e. submit a nomination package). Sections have the flexibility to adopt what process will be serve their communities in seeking their lecture recipients.

Nominee Eligibility Requirement(s)

  • Active AGU membership is not a requirement
  • The candidate will be a single contributor who is completing significant work and who is making an impact in the fields of global biogeochemistry and marine geochemistry through conclusions based on novel measurements.
  • Review AGU Conflict of Interest policy for ineligible nominees

Nominator Eligibility Requirement(s)

  • Active AGU membership is not a requirement
  • Review AGU Conflict of Interest policy for ineligible relationships

Supporter Eligibility Requirement(s)

  • Active AGU membership is not a requirement

Submission

During even-numbered years, the Reeburgh Lecture is managed by the Ocean Sciences Section. During odd-numbered years, the Reeburgh Lecture is managed by the Biogeosciences Section. Nominations for the 2019 Reeburgh Lecture as presented by the Biogeosciences Section are being accepted at this time. Nominations can be submitted to Elise Pendall. Should you have any questions, please contact Elise Pendall or the AGU Honors Team for assistance.

AGU’s Honors Program aligns with AGU’s mission, vision, core values and strategic plan.

Committee Charge:

  • Select the recipient of the AGU Biogeosciences Section Reeburgh Lecture Committee; the final decision is subject for approval of the AGU Biogeosciences Sciences Section President/Chair.
  • Interpret the scope of the award broadly and in accordance with stated purpose for the award.
  • Do not depend solely on unsolicited nominations. Although committee members are not eligible to submit nominations, they need to be proactive by encouraging nominations through committee member contacts.
  • Conform to AGU conflict of interest policies and protocols for selection committees. State, as part of the award recommendation to the AGU Biogeosciences Section President/Chair, the number of candidates considered.
  • Define an objective and fair process used for reaching the decision.
  • In addition to selecting the recipient of the AGU Biogeosciences Reeburgh Lecture, the Award Committee members should work with the Biogeosciences Executive Committee and Advisory Board to increase the number of nominations of viable candidates in underrepresented groups.
