Early Career Committee - Improving Field Work Culture Coffee Hour

By Joseph Woo posted 06-23-2021 14:53

Early career scientists - the AGU Atmospheric Science Early Career Committee and Hydrology Section Student Subcommittee are hosting an informal discussion of how to improve fieldwork culture on Tuesday, June 29th from 4:30-5:30PM ET. We will introduce tools and steps that the individual can take to be active allies during field campaigns, and practice applying those tools to real-life scenarios that have occurred in the field.

Conducting field work can be a once-in-a-lifetime, formative experience for students and early career atmospheric scientists. Unfortunately, it is also where verbal and physical harassment and discrimination are experienced, particularly by more junior scientists, at startlingly high rates (Clancy et al. 2014). Still, rising awareness of these issues is leading to a growth in resources outlining meaningful steps to prevent such behavior in the field. For these reasons, the AGU Atmospheric Science Early Career Committee will hold an informal discussion of how to improve fieldwork culture. We will introduce tools and steps that the individual can take to be active allies during field campaigns, and practice applying those tools to real-life scenarios that have occurred in the field. The information and experiences shared in this webinar will be synthesized as part of a white paper examining the state of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion for early career atmospheric scientists.
